Chiropractic Treatment Built so you don’t Need it Anymore
Dr. Emily Blair is the founder of Blue Sky Therapeutics, a chiropractic and manual therapy practice in Albuquerque that operates on a philosophy most clinics don't bother with: figure out why the body is doing what it's doing, fix the actual problem, and send people back out into their lives.
That philosophy, and the practice built around it, grew out of a path that wound through Maine, UC Santa Cruz, Florida, Nevada, chiropractic school in Oregon, and eventually a finger pointed on a map, and the words: "Let's try Albuquerque."
The Long Way Around
Before chiropractic school, Blair was a legal secretary. She loved the work at a small firm: knew all the clients and felt genuinely useful. When she moved to Nevada and landed at the Attorney General's Office, the shine wore off fast.
She eventually found herself going through a divorce, recovering from meniscus surgery, and waking up in pain when her chiropractor got her sorted out. Something clicked. She researched what it would take to become one herself. "I thought, surely it's a two-year degree." It was four, with no applicable prerequisites. She did the math, enrolled in night school anyway, and three and a half years later she was in chiropractic school in Oregon. After graduating, she and her partner looked at a map, ruled out Las Vegas, and landed in Albuquerque for a fresh start.
She opened Blue Sky Therapeutics two months after moving. "I was dumb enough to just open a business knowing nobody," she laughs.
Why Albuquerque Stuck
Simply put: the weather. Emily loves the outdoors and staying active, and Albuquerque’s mild seasons were too attractive to pass up. "I like the climate, it seemed like a lot of outdoorsy people, which is a demographic I like to work with. I believe so strongly in people staying active, especially as they age."
A Different Kind of Chiropractic
Walk into most chiropractic offices and you know exactly what's coming. In and out, crack the back, same muscle always tight, same joint always stuck, “see ya next week.” Blair noticed that pattern early, even in school. "Why am I always releasing the same muscle or adjusting the same joint?” People shouldn’t have to keep coming back - they should be improving and getting better so they DON’T have to return!
At Blue Sky, Blair uses a wide variety of modalities, all in combination with traditional chiropractic care. It’s all about rebuilding stability from the ground up, literally. It takes patients back through the developmental movement patterns we were born with: the same ones a baby uses to learn how to stabilize, push up, roll over, and eventually stand. Most adults, she says, have traded true stability for tension.
"We’re holding up our bodies with tension. We're like a suspension bridge. With compensations and injuries over the years, those tension wires are all over the place. You can release the tension, but it's going to get tight again, because that's how you're holding up the bridge."
Massaging a tight muscle or adjusting a stuck joint gives temporary relief. What Blair is after is the reason the body is protecting that area in the first place. "A lot of times a muscle is tight because it's guarding a nerve. Until you figure out why the body is protecting that, it's going to keep getting tight, no matter how much you massage it or adjust it."
The result, she says, is a "terrible business model," in the best possible sense. Patients get better. They go live their lives. They run into her at the grocery store and apologize for not coming in, and she tells them not to. "Treatment shouldn't be trauma. If you work with the body and really listen to where things want to release, it lasts longer."
Blue Sky's services cover three main areas. On the bodywork side, Blair offers rehab chiropractic and manual therapy, drawing on a deep toolkit that accounts for each patient's history and nervous system rather than a one-size-fits-all protocol. The practice also offers massage therapy focused on scar tissue, adhesions, and functional tissue health. Rounding out the offerings is Class IV laser therapy, using an Aspen Ascent Quad laser that can operate across four different wavelengths simultaneously. That flexibility lets Blair match the treatment depth and intensity to the specific condition, whether that's back pain, plantar fasciitis, arthritis, nerve-related issues, or any number of other complaints. Treatments are brief, painless, and FDA cleared for pain, inflammation, muscle spasms, and arthritis.
A Space Designed to Feel Different
Blair was intentional about how the new space all came together. The treatment rooms are calm and private. The whole suite flows in a way that doesn't feel clinical or cold, a deliberate choice for a practice that attracts people who have often had frustrating experiences elsewhere.
The new spot also sits right in the middle of the city, a mile from I-40 and a mile from I-25, making it easy to get to from just about anywhere in Albuquerque.
Who Thrives Here
When asked who benefits most from Blue Sky's approach, Blair's answer is more specific, and more entertaining, than you might expect. "My two favorite client bases are hippies and engineers."
Engineers love the detail. They want to know exactly why a muscle is doing what it's doing, and they follow through on their homework. Hippies are drawn to the neural and visceral work because they feel it in a way that resonates with how they already think about the body."
Beyond those archetypes, her wheelhouse is people in their 40s and up who have been told by their doctors what they have, but not what to do about it, and who are done accepting that as the final answer.
"A lot of people come in tired of going to the doctor, not being explained to why this is going on. Here's medicine, here's surgery. They want to know: what’s actually going on, and what can we do?"
The Menopause Squad
Blair's most recent collaboration brings together three practitioners under a shared initiative she calls the Menopause Squad. Along with a nurse practitioner and a psychiatric nurse, she offers a full-circle approach to the physical, hormonal, and mental health dimensions of menopause, all under one roof.
For Blair's part, the focus is on scar tissue work and structural function, getting the body as mobile and resilient as possible at a stage of life when bone density and tissue health are genuinely at stake. A dedicated website, menopausesquad.com, outlines the full offering and connects visitors to each of the individual practices.
It's the kind of integrated, honest, whole-person approach that defines everything Blair does at Blue Sky. And it's one more reason that, twelve years after pointing at a map and landing in a city she didn't know, she's still here and still building.
